<p>The base was opened as Carswell AFB and occupied from August 1942 for medium and heavy bomber training until 1945. Carswell was assigned to Continental Air Force in April 1945 (redesignated to SAC on 21 March 1946) with the 7th BW activated in November 1947 and currently still in residence. Other SAC units stationed at Carswell AFB have included the 11th BW between 1951 and 1960, 4123rd Strategic Wing from 1957 to 1959 and 403rd BW during 1960 and 1961. The 43rd BW was assigned between 1960 and 1964 as the combat crew training unit for the B-58 Hustler before the unit moved to Little Rock AFB. The unit was stationed at Carswell primarily because the huge Convair production line was located across the runway from Carswell AFB, and the close location of the first unit would ease the transition to the revolutionary new bomber. The 340th BG was formed at Carswell in July 1968 to conduct a similar role for the FB-111A. The 7th BW operated the B-29 and B-36 before converting to the B-52F in 1957 and subsequently the B-52D and B-52H. The wing had transferred its B-52s to the 2nd Wing by December 1992, with the unit inactivating early in 1993. The base was due to close by September 1993, but instead became an Air Reserve Base before being transferred to the Navy as NAS Fort Worth on 1 October 1994.
